Second Language Requirement
All CLA students pursuing B.A., B.F.A. in Art, or B.I.S. degrees must satisfy the second language requirement. To satisfy this requirement, you must either:- complete a fourth-semester, college-level language course of at least four (4) semester credits with a grade of C- or better, or S, or
- pass the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE), which tests listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at the fourth-semester level.
As a CLA student you must, regardless of degree, satisfy the high school preparation second language requirement. Satisfying this requirement means completing two years of a single second language in high school or two semesters of a single second language in college.
Second language learning at the University of Minnesota:
- is offered in 40 languages,
- can be continued from a language you studied in high school,
- may not be required for you if English is your second language (speak with your student community adviser about possible exemption from this requirement).

Take appropriate placement tests. Consult with your student community adviser if you have questions about language placement testing or course placement.

Consider how second language learning could complement your personal, major, or career goals.
